The Void collects nothing. There is no account, no server, and no analytics. Nothing you record is transmitted anywhere, because there is nowhere for it to go — the app makes no network requests carrying your content at all.
This is not a promise about how carefully data is handled. It is a statement that the data never leaves your device in the first place.
What is stored, and where
Everything the app keeps is stored on your device only:
- Your entries. Typed entries are encrypted with a key generated on your device. Audio and video recordings are stored as files inside the app's private storage.
- The encryption key. Held in the system keychain, marked device-only (
WHEN_UNLOCKED_THIS_DEVICE_ONLY). It is deliberately excluded from iCloud Keychain and from encrypted device backups. - Counts. How many entries have been sealed, how many were opened early, and roughly what time of day entries were made. These draw your own log inside the app and are never sent anywhere.
- Your calm message, if you write one. Encrypted with the same key.
The vault does not survive the phone. Because the key is device-only and excluded from backups, losing or wiping the device means the contents are gone permanently. There is no recovery, and no one — including us — can restore it. That is the intended behaviour, not a limitation: a vault that can be exported is a vault someone can be pressured into exporting.
What is never collected
- No name, email address, phone number, or account of any kind
- No advertising identifier, device fingerprint, or analytics
- No crash or performance reporting
- No location data
- No contacts, and no photo library access. On Android the app explicitly blocks media-library permissions
- No copy of your entries on any server, because there is no server
Two honest limitations
We would rather state these plainly than have you discover them.
Recordings are not encrypted at rest
Audio and video files are held in the app's private storage and protected by the operating system's file protection, not by the app's own encryption. Encrypting a long video on the device would make the app unusable in the moment it is needed. Typed entries and your calm message are encrypted.
Screenshot blocking is not available on iOS
On Android, The Void sets a system flag that genuinely blocks screenshots and screen recording. Apple provides no equivalent API, so on iOS the app can only detect and blank content in some circumstances. On either platform, a second camera pointed at the screen defeats it entirely.
Permissions
Camera and microphone — only to make a recording you have started. They are used while you record and at no other time. No other permissions are requested.
Third parties
The app contains no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs.
Two interactions involve Apple or Google directly, and neither transmits your entries or anything derived from them:
- The rating prompt. The app may occasionally ask the operating system to show its standard rating dialog. That dialog is presented by Apple or Google, and the app is not told what you choose, or whether you responded at all.
- The share link in Settings. This sends only the app's public store URL. It contains nothing about you and nothing about what you have put in the app.
Downloading the app from the App Store or Google Play is a transaction with Apple or Google, governed by their privacy policies rather than this one.
Children
The Void is not directed at children and is rated for adults. It is built for people managing acute emotional distress, and it does not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age, because it does not collect information.
Deleting your data
Settings › Delete everything removes every entry, every recording, and the encryption key itself. Once the key is gone, any remaining encrypted data is permanently unreadable. Deleting the app from your device has the same effect.
Individual entries can be deleted at any time, including while sealed. The seal prevents an entry being read or sent — it never prevents it being destroyed.
Your rights
Regulations such as the GDPR and CCPA give you rights to access, correct, export, or delete personal data a company holds about you. Robot in the Attic Productions holds no personal data about you, so there is nothing for us to retrieve, correct, or delete. Your data is in your hands, on your device, and the delete control is inside the app.
Changes
If this policy changes, the effective date above changes with it, and any change that affects what leaves your device will be stated in the app's release notes rather than only here.
